Generational Differences and Work Dynamics: Insights from MYCo Research in Germany
The MYCo research conducted in Germany by assist Gesellschaft für Personalentwicklung und Unternehmensberatung mbH thoroughly explores the differences between generations in the workplace, analyzing values, communication styles, conflict management, digitalization, and perceptions of inclusion.
The sample consists of 30 participants, predominantly Millennials (ages 28-43) with a balanced participation of males and females, although some gender differences related to life choices emerged. Most participants work in large companies, especially in urban contexts, with a notable presence of international activities.
A key finding is the significant difference in values and attitudes toward work: younger generations prioritize innovation, flexibility, inclusion, and work-life balance, while older generations place higher importance on stability, experience, and hierarchical structures.
The different communication styles cause misunderstandings: younger generations favor digital tools and informal messaging, while older ones prefer direct, formal communication and face-to-face meetings. These differences sometimes cause tensions or delays in work activities, but the research suggests personalized feedback policies and open dialogue as effective tools to improve intergenerational coexistence.
Another central theme relates to the digital divide: older generations often report difficulties in familiarizing themselves with new technologies and digital tools. Continuous training, mentoring, and inclusive corporate culture are identified as key strategies to overcome these barriers.
The research also addresses perceptions of diversity and inclusion: factors such as gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and disability are seen as elements influencing intergenerational dynamics, with younger groups more sensitive and aware of these issues.
Finally, the importance of mutual support among colleagues from different generations and the need to foster collaborative, inclusive, and trust-based work environments are emphasized to fully leverage the richness of generational differences.
